Picture 1 – Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 176, (94-D-176), February 1994.


Dublin Bus, (Donnybrook Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 176, (94-D-176), Volvo chassis number 025190, Alexander order D09/01 was photographed on the production line in the Walter Alexander bus factory in Mallusk, Northern Ireland in February 1994 which when completed was delivered new to Donnybrook Garage in May 1994. RA 176 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Donnybrook between May and July 1994, RA 176 (94-D-176) to RA 195 (94-D-195). RA 176 was the first Cummins engined Dublin Bus Olympian built on a Volvo chassis, sporting a redesigned front grille area featuring 4 square headlights with wrap round indicators and bumper mounted square foglights, silver coloured wheel rims and Volvo badging. In 1996, RA 176 was painted into a navy coloured ‘EC Presidency (July 1996 to December 1996)’, All Over Advertisement (AOA). It was withdrawn from service at Donnybrook in October 2006 and by December 2006 had received the red/white livery of the Dublin Bus Driving School and as at March 2011 is still an active member of the driving school fleet.

Dublin Bus, (Donnybrook Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 176, (94-D-176) driven by Des Willis was only a month in service when photographed at the route 46A terminus on Fleet Street in June 1994. Cummins engined RA 176 was the first Dublin Bus Olympian built on a Volvo chassis following on from the 175 Cummins engined RH class Olympians built on a Leyland chassis, RH 1, (90-D-1001) to RH 175, (93-D-10175) delivered new between 1990 and 1993.

Dublin Bus, (Donnybrook Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 177, (94-D-177) in the very eye catching 'Dublin Bus Nitelink' AOA livery was photographed in August 1999 parked in the Donnybrook Garage maintenance area.

Dublin Bus, (Donnybrook Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 177, (94-D-177) in Dublin Bus Driving School red/white livery was photographed in March 2008 stopped outside of Easons Bookshop on O’Connell Street, Dublin. RA 177 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Donnybrook Garage between May and July 1994, RA 176 (94-D-176) to RA 195 (94-D-195). Six of this twenty bus batch joined the Dublin Bus Driving School in December 2006 receiving this red/white livery, (RA 176 to RA 181 inclusive) and as at March 2011, only RA 176 and 177 remain in use with the Driving School.

Dublin Bus, (Donnybrook Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 178, (94-D-178) had just been spray painted into this test fleet navy/cream livery when photographed in September 1997 parked in the Donnybrook Garage maintenance area. A similar version of this test fleet livery was also applied to Donnybrook based single deck, DAF SB220, Alexander Setanta, AD 60, (94-D-33060). Following on from the trials, a similar livery was applied to 5 of the 6 new build VL class Volvo B10L, Alexander Ultra low floor single decks delivered to Donnybrook Garage in late 1997/early 1998, VL 1,(97-D-59001) to VL 5, (98-D-2005). VL 6, (98-D-2006) was delivered in an AOA livery for Natural Gas.

Dublin Bus, (Donnybrook Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 179, (94-D-179) in Dublin Bus white Wedding Bus livery was only two or so months in service when photographed in August 1994 at the route 7 terminus on Burgh Quay. RA 179 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Donnybrook Garage between May and July 1994, RA 176 (94-D-176) to RA 195 (94-D-195), all in green livery except RA 179 and RA 182 which were delivered in white Wedding Bus livery. Six of this twenty bus batch joined the Dublin Bus Driving School in late 2006 receiving this red/white livery, (RA 176 to RA 181 inclusive) and as at March 2011, only RA 176 and 177 remain in use with the Driving School.

Dublin Bus, (Donnybrook Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 183, (94-D-183) in Dublin Bus green livery was brand new when photographed in June 1994 at the route 46B terminus in Fleet Street. RA 183 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Donnybrook Garage between May and July 1994, RA 176 (94-D-176) to RA 195 (94-D-195), all in green livery except RA 179 and RA 182 which were delivered in white Wedding Bus livery. Six of this twenty bus batch joined the Dublin Bus Driving School in late 2006 receiving this red/white livery, (RA 176 to RA 181 inclusive). Following withdrawal from service at Donnybrook in October 2006, RA 183 was acquired by Happy Als Coaches, Birkenhead, UK and was re-registered L 969 UTU.

Dublin Bus, (Donnybrook Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 185, (94-D-185) was photographed in June 1994 on College Green on delivery from the Alexander factory in Mallusk to Donnybrook Garage, with delivery giveaway details, 999 on the dmd and Bus Atha missing from the name on the offside. RA 183 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Donnybrook Garage between May and July 1994, RA 176 (94-D-176) to RA 195 (94-D-195), all in green livery except RA 179 and RA 182 which were delivered in white Wedding Bus livery. Six of this twenty bus batch joined the Dublin Bus Driving School in late 2006 receiving this red/white livery, (RA 176 to RA 181 inclusive). Following withdrawal from service at Donnybrook in October 2006, RA 185 was acquired by Happy Als Coaches, Birkenhead, UK and was re-registered L 956 UTU.

Dublin Bus, (Donnybrook Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 191, (94-D-191) in Dublin Bus green livery was brand new when photographed in June 1994 at the route 46A terminus in Fleet Street. RA 191 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Donnybrook between May and July 1994, RA 176 (94-D-176) to RA 195 (94-D-195), all in green livery except RA 179 and RA 182 which were delivered in white Wedding Bus livery. Six of this twenty bus batch joined the Dublin Bus Driving School in late 2006 receiving this red/white livery, (RA 176 to RA 181 inclusive). RA 191 received an AOA livery for Heinz Baked Beans in 1999. Following withdrawal from service at Donnybrook in October 2006, RA 191 was sold to Happy Als Coaches, Birkenhead, UK and was re-registeredL 139 VDM.

Dublin Bus, (Donnybrook Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 195, (94-D-195) in Dublin Bus navy/cream livery was only a month away from withdrawal from Dublin Bus service when photographed on Nassau Street in September 2006. RA 195 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Donnybrook between May and July 1994, RA 176 (94-D-176) to RA 195 (94-D-195), all in green livery except RA 179 and RA 182 which were delivered in white Wedding Bus livery. Six of this twenty bus batch joined the Dublin Bus Driving School in late 2006 receiving this red/white livery,(RA 176 to RA 181 inclusive). Following withdrawal from service at Donnybrook in October 2006,RA 195 was acquired by Happy Als Coaches, Birkenhead, UK and was re-registered L 46 VDM.

Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 196, (95-D-196) in Dublin Bus green livery was brand new when photographed in March 1995 at the route 15 terminus on College Green, Dublin. RA 196 was the first of the 1995 deliveries and one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage between March and April 1995, RA 196, (95-D-196) to RA 215 (95-D-215), all in green livery. Notice the RH 196 decal on the nearside front, a decision was later made to re-classify the Volvo Olympians to the RA class to differentiate them from the RH Leyland Olympians. Notice too the roof dome marker lights, these were generally fitted to the first bus of each year’s batch, they were also fitted to the rear dome. Three of this twenty bus batch joined the Dublin Bus Driving School in October 2006 retaining their fleet navy/yellow livery, (RA 196 to RA 198 inclusive).

Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 201, (95-D-201) in Dublin Bus green livery was only a month in service when photographed in April 1995 operating the route 15A inbound to the city on the Rathmines Road. RA 201 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage between March and April 1995, RA 196, (95-D-196) to RA 215 (95-D-215), all in green livery.  Three of this twenty bus batch joined the Dublin Bus Driving School in October 2006 retaining their fleet navy/yellow livery, (RA 196 to RA 198 inclusive).

McColls of Dumbarton, Scotland fleet number 3034, (M 396 JGB), was photographed in April 2010 about to enter Argyle Street, Glasgow, Scotland. This bus is ex. Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), ex ‘Heineken Rhythm Bus’AOA livery, Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 208, (95-D-208). In late 2007, McColls bought many ex Dublin Bus RAs and took five from within this Ringsend batch, RA 206, 208, 211, 213, 215.  A full list of ex. Dublin Bus RAs acquired by McColls, as follows: RA 206 (3033),208 (3034), 211 (3029), 213 (3028), 215 (3015), 227 (3016), 229 (3014), 231 (3013), 232 (3018),233 (3017), 236 (3032), 237 (3035), 245 (3019), 252 (3030), 284 (3031), 285 (3021), 286 (3020).In August 2010, McColls acquired ex. Dublin Bus, Volvo engined, Volvo Olympians, Alexander,RV 408, 504, 519, 541 and 544 which were gradually phased into McColls services from October 2010.  RA 208, (96-D-208) was the first RA to receive an AOA, receiving two different ‘Heineken’ AOA liveries as ‘Heineken Rhythm Guide’ during 1998 which was replaced with a ‘Heineken Music’AOA in 1999, and while in these liveries, it operated out of Phibsboro and Donnybrook Garages and also went to Galway on a Heineken promotion. Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 209, (95-D-209) in Dublin Bus green livery was brand new when photographed in April 1995 at the route 15B terminus on College Green, Dublin. Summerhill Garage based Leyland Atlantean, AN68, Vanhool, D 695, (695 ZO) operating the route 16A and Phibsboro Garage, Bombardier, KD 211, (211 OZU) operating the route 22A to Drimnagh were passing by at the time. RA 209 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage between March and April 1995, RA 196, (95-D-196) to RA 215 (95-D-215), all in green livery. RA 209 was withdrawn from service at Ringsend in November 2007, and found a new home with Silverdale, Nottingham, UK in summer 2008.

Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 209, (95-D-209) in Dublin Bus green livery was brand new when photographed in April 1995 at the route 15B terminus at Anne Devlin Park, Rathfarnham. RA 209 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage between March and April 1995, RA 196, (95-D-196) to RA 215 (95-D-215), all in green livery. RA 209 was withdrawn from service at Ringsend in November 2007, and found a new home with Silverdale, Nottingham, UK in summer 2008.

Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 211, (95-D-211) in Dublin Bus green livery was brand new when photographed in April 1995 at the route 15B terminus on College Green.RA 211 was withdrawn from service at Ringsend in February 2008, and found a new home with McColls of Dumbarton, Scotland as fleet number 3029, (M 258 JGB). In late 2007/early 2008, McColls bought many ex. Dublin Bus, Volvo Olympian, RAs and took five from within this Ringsend batch,RA 206, 208, 211, 213, 215.  A full list of ex. Dublin Bus RAs acquired by McColls, are as follows:RA 206 (3033), 208 (3034), 211 (3029), 213 (3028), 215 (3015), 227 (3016), 229 (3014), 231 (3013), 232 (3018), 233 (3017), 236 (3032), 237 (3035), 245 (3019), 252 (3030), 284 (3031), 285 (3021), 286 (3020). In August 2010, McColls acquired ex. Dublin Bus, Volvo engined, Volvo Olympians, Alexander, RV 408, 504, 519, 541 and 544 which were gradually phased into McColls services from October 2010.

Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 212, (95-D-212) in Dublin Bus green livery was brand new when photographed in April 1995 at the route 15B terminus on College Green.RA 212 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage between March and April 1995, RA 196, (95-D-196) to RA 215 (95-D-215), all in green livery. RA 212 was withdrawn from service at Ringsend in November 2007.

Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 213, (95-D-213) in Dublin Bus navy/yellow fleet livery was 11 years old when photographed in May 2006 on Nassau Street while operating the route 15B. RA 213 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage between March and April 1995, RA 196, (95-D-196) to RA 215 (95-D-215), all in green livery. RA 213 was withdrawn from service at Ringsend in January 2008, later joining the McColls Dumbarton bus fleet as fleet number 3028 (M 381 JGB).

Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 214, (95-D-214) in Dublin Bus green livery was brand new when photographed in April 1995 at the route 15B terminus on College Green, Dublin. RA 214 was one of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage between March and April 1995, RA 196, (95-D-196) to RA 215 (95-D-215), all in green livery. RA 214 was withdrawn from service at Ringsend in January 2008.

Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 215, (95-D-215) in Dublin Bus green livery was brand new when photographed in April 1995 at the route 15B terminus at Anne Devlin Park, Rathfarnham. RA 215 was the last of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage between March and April 1995, RA 196, (95-D-196) to RA 215 (95-D-215), all in green livery. RA 215 was withdrawn from service at Ringsend in November 2007, later joining the McColls Dumbarton bus fleet as fleet number 3015, (M 275 JGB), it was written off after striking a low clearance bridge in Dumbarton, Scotland in January 2010.

Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 215, (95-D-215) in Dublin Bus green livery was brand new when photographed in April 1995 at the route 15B terminus at Anne Devlin Park, Rathfarnham along side Ringsend’s last and last day in service ex. Donnybrook Garage ex. ‘Denny’ AOA, Leyland Atlantean AN68, Vanhool, DF 785 (785 BIK) which was driven by Tony Cooney. RA 215 was the last of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage between March and April 1995, RA 196, (95-D-196) to RA 215 (95-D-215), all in green livery. RA 215 was withdrawn from service at Ringsend in November 2007, later joining the McColls Dumbarton bus fleet as fleet number 3015 (M 275 JGB), it was written off after striking a low clearance bridge in Dumbarton, Scotland in January 2010.

Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 215, (95-D-215) in Dublin Bus navy/yellow fleet livery was photographed on O’Connell Street while operating Summerhill’s route 748 (Heuston Station to Dublin Airport). RA 215 was on loan to Summerhill from Ringsend to cover for the acquisition of Summerhill’s then new 2006 registered AX class, Volvo B7LDD, ALX400’s for use on the ‘2006 Ryder Cup’ car park shuttles to/from the golf venue at the K Club, Straffan, Co. Kildare.  RA 215 was the last of a twenty bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage between March and April 1995, RA 196, (95-D-196) to RA 215 (95-D-215), all in green livery. RA 215 was withdrawn from service at Ringsend a little over a year later in November 2007, later joining the McColls Dumbarton bus fleet as fleet number 3015 (M 275 JGB), it was written off after striking a low clearance bridge in Dumbarton, Scotland in January 2010

 

Picture 23 -  Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 216, (95-D-216), August 1995

Dublin Bus, (Phibsboro Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 216, (95-D-216) in Dublin Bus Cityswift livery was only a couple of months in service when photographed in August 1995 at the route 37 terminus in Carpenterstown. RA 216 was the first RA delivered in Cityswift livery and the first RA fitted with individual Lazzarini bucket seating and was one of a four bus batch delivered new to Phibsboro Garage in June 1995, RA 216, (95-D-216) to RA 219, (95-D-219), all in Cityswift livery, they were withdrawn from service at Phibsboro in late 2000 and all four reappeared as Dublin Bus City Tour open tops by April 2001 and as at March 2011 still fulfil this role. Notice the roof dome marker lights, these they were also fitted to the rear dome, these marker lights also featured on Ringsend’s RA 196,(96-D-196)

Dublin Bus, (Phibsboro Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 217, (95-D-217) in basic Cityswift livery was only a couple of months in service when photographed in August 1995 at the route 37 terminus on Abbey Street. RA 217 was one of a four bus batch delivered new to Phibsboro Garage in June 1995, RA 216, (95-D-216) to RA 219, (95-D-219), all in Cityswift livery, they were withdrawn from service at Phibsboro in late 2000 and all four reappeared as Dublin Bus City Tour open tops by April 2001 and as at March 2011 still fulfil this role.

Dublin Bus, (Phibsboro Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 219, (95-D-219) in Dublin Bus Cityswift livery was only a couple of months in service when photographed in August 1995 at the route 37 terminus at Carpenterstown. The very popular and ever smiling 37 bus driver Joe Keogh stands proudly beside his new bus, sadly Joe died very suddenly in February 2000, aged 56, having just parked his bus at the route 37 city centre terminus. Joe is still remembered fondly and so missed by his Dublin Bus colleagues and his many route 37 passengers.

Dublin Bus, (Phibsboro Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 219, (95-D-219) in Dublin Bus City Tour green/cream livery was photographed in June 2006 off its normal tour route turning right off Marlborough Street onto Eden Quay. RA 219 was one of a four bus batch delivered new to Phibsboro Garage in June 1995, RA 216, (95-D-216) to RA 219, (95-D-219), all in Cityswift livery, they were withdrawn from service at Phibsboro in late 2000 and all four reappeared as Dublin Bus City Tour open tops by April 2001 and as at March 2011 still fulfil this role.

Dublin Bus, (Phibsboro Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 219, (95-D-219) in the latest Dublin Bus City Tour livery was photographed in June 2010 about to turn right off St.Stephen’s Green onto Dawson Street. RA 219 was one of a four bus batch delivered new to Phibsboro Garage in June 1995, RA 216, (95-D-216) to RA 219, (95-D-219), all in Cityswift livery, they were withdrawn from service at Phibsboro in late 2000 and all four reappeared as Dublin Bus City Tour open tops by April 2001 and as at March 2011 still fulfil this role.

Dublin Bus, (Donnybrook Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 221, (95-D-221) in basic Cityswift livery was photographed on Eden Quay about to operate the former Summerhill Garage operated route 54A, (Eden Quay to Tallaght). RA 221 was one of a five bus batch delivered new to Donnybrook Garage in June 1995, RA 220, (95-D-10220) to RA 224, (95-D-224), all in Cityswift livery. They were withdrawn from service at Donnybrook in September 2007 and found new homes with bus operators in the UK. The registration 95-D-220 for RA 220 was unavailable perhaps due to reservation by a Mercedes E220 owner, so substitute number 95-D-10220 was used.

Dublin Bus, (Conyngham Road Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 227, (95-D-227) in basic Cityswift livery was photographed on Abbey Street about to operate the route 66 to Maynooth. RA 227 was one of a five bus batch delivered new to Conyngham Road Garage in June 1995, RA 225,(95-D-225) to RA 229, (95-D-229), RA 225 to 227 were delivered in Cityswift livery and RA 228 and 229 were in white wedding bus livery. The 5 bus batch were withdrawn from service in December 2007, RA 227 and 229 found a new home with McColls of Dumbarton, Scotland as fleet numbers 3016/3014 (M277 JGB/M 274 JGB), the other three buses in the batch found a new home with Skills Motor Coaches, Nottingham, UK.

Dublin Bus, (Conyngham Road Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 228, (95-D-228) in white Wedding Bus livery was photographed outside Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Navan Road in September 1995. RA 228 was one of a five bus batch delivered new to Conyngham Road Garage in June 1995, RA 225, (95-D-225) to RA 229, (95-D-229), RA 225 to 227 were delivered in Cityswift livery and RA 228 and 229 were in white wedding bus livery. The 5 bus batch were withdrawn from service in December 2007, RA 227 and 229 found a new home with McColls of Dumbarton, Scotland as fleet numbers 3016/3014 (M277 JGB/M 274 JGB), the other three buses in the batch found a new home with Skills Motor Coaches, Nottingham, UK..

Dublin Bus, (Ringsend Garage), Volvo Olympian, Alexander, RA 231, (95-D-231) in fleet green livery was brand new when photographed in July 1995 at the route 65B terminus on Eden Quay. RA 231 was one of a five bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage in July 1995, RA 230, (95-D-230) to RA 234, (95-D-234), all in fleet green livery except RA 230 which was in white Wedding Bus livery. In February 2000, while operating the route 65, RA 234 was totally destroyed by fire at Tinode, County Wicklow. The remaining four of this five bus batch were withdrawn from service in February 2008, RA 230 was sold to Cronin’s, Cork, RA 231 to 233 found a new home with McColls of Dumbarton, Scotland.

RA 233 was one of a five bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage in July 1995,RA 230, (95-D-230) to RA 234, (95-D-234), all in fleet green livery except RA 230 which was in white wedding bus livery. RA 234 was the last of a five bus batch delivered new to Ringsend Garage in July 1995, RA 230, (95-D-230) to RA 234, (95-D-234), all in fleet green livery except RA 230 which was in white wedding bus livery. RA 236 was one of a seven bus batch delivered new to Donnybrook Garage in July 1995,RA 235, (95-D-10235) to RA 241, (95-D-241), all in fleet green livery. This entire seven bus batch was withdrawn from Dublin Bus service in October 2007, RA 235 went to Skills Motor Coaches, Nottingham, UK, RA 236 & 237 found a new home with McColls of Dumbarton, Scotland, RA 238 to 241 went to Brylaine, Boston, UK. The registration 95-D-235 was unavailable for RA 235 perhaps due to reservation by a private car buyer so the substitute registration number 95-D-10235 was used.

At the time of the photograph, a television advert was being shot at the main door of Clerys for The National Lottery - Lotto draw, notice Clerys clock was re-set to 19:45 (7:45pm) and actors/actresses can be seen apparently rushing to buy their Lotto ticket in time for the 20:00 (8pm) Lotto draw.

Following withdrawal from service in November 2007, RA 256 went to Dualway of Rathcoole where it was converted into an open top for use on the Guide Friday Dublin City Tour, also in this batch, RA 260 joined the Dublin Bus City Tour fleet as an open top in May 2002.

Following withdrawal from service at Donnybrook in November 2007, RA 256 went to Dualway of Rathcoole where it was converted into an open top for use on the Guide Friday Dublin City Tour above.

RA 309 was destroyed by fire in September 2002 in Clondalkin, the rest of the batch was withdrawn from service by mid 2008.

RA 316 was one of a two bus batch delivered new to Clontarf Garage in October 1996, RA 315, (96-D-315) to RA 316, (96-D-316) in Cityswift livery, later transferring to Harristown Garage following its opening in autumn 2004. The diagonal bar and Volvo grille badge is not an original RA feature, this adornment was factory fitted only to Volvo engined, RV 326, (97-D-326) to RV 640,(99-D-640) inclusive.

RA 325  was the last RA built for Dublin Bus and was one of a nine bus batch delivered new to Summerhill Garage between October and November 1996, RA 317, (96-D-317) toRA 325, (96-D-325). The entire batch was withdrawn in December 2007/January 2008. The next Volvo Olympians delivered to Dublin Bus commenced in 1997 with Donnybrook’s RV 326, (97-D-326) built on a Volvo chassis but with a Volvo engine replacing the Cummins engine fitted to all Dublin Bus RH Leyland Olympians, RH 1 to RH 175 and RA Volvo Olympians, RA 176 to RA 325.
